The Naranjo region’s original name was “Los Naranjos,” due to abundance of orange coffee trees. Naranjo has a great religious influence as evidenced by the Basilica of Our Lady of Mercies, located in the city of Naranjo. The basilica is considered the architectural jewel of the canton and has been declared a historical and architectural heritage of Costa Rica. San Juanillo is the area located in the highest mountains of the Naranjo Region, in Costa Rica’s West Valley.
